What I Read - October 2022

Hello and welcome!

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve done a what I read in a month post (check out my others here) and I’m very excited to be back rounding up some of the books I read over the past month. This month I read two books, one that I finished most of it in the month of October but started before and one I did read from start to finish in October. I feel like that’s pretty solid considering I have a 3-year-old and a 1-month-old so I’m pretty proud of myself.

For those of you who have read my reading posts before, you know I like to read different formats of books and generally am reading multiple books at once. I normally read one book as a physical copy but honestly, now that I’m breastfeeding again (which is when I am typically reading), it’s just way too hard for me to hold a physical book and a baby all at once. So I’ve switched to reading primarily on my Kindle and I’ve also still been listening to Audible when I’m doing housework, although not as much but I still am. I really love having these resources to read in these different formats. I think a lot of people have the wrong idea about reading like “how on earth can I read if I have kids or especially if I’ve just had a baby?” It’s really more simple than you think. A.) it’s a choice and B.) you just have to find what works for you to keep you reading. For me, that’s definitely been my Kindle.

With all that said, let’s get into the reads!

Fame by Karen Kingsbury

One book I finished in the month of October was part of the latest Karen Kingsbury series I’ve started: the Firstborn series. If you’ve seen my other posts then you probably know that I’ve recently finished the Redemption series. That is the very first series on the Baxter Family and y’all know I was hooked since the beginning. So I’m really excited to be in this next series. At this point, these characters feel like my family and have even helped me get through some nearly sleepless nights with my newborn.

*Spoilers ahead!!!

The first book in this series is called Fame. This book follows mainly the firstborn son of the Baxter family who was given up for adoption as a baby. He is Hollywood’s heartthrob, Dayne Matthews. Dayne finds a kids' drama club teacher in Bloomington, Indiana named Katy Hart who is an ex-actress, and calls her out for an audition for his new movie. Love strikes up quickly between the two and some really crazy stuff happens. The book also follows Ashley Baxter and her new life with her husband, Landon. We also get introduced to a new family whom Katy Hart lives with, the Flaningans. All these new characters are truly incredible and I’m so involved with this new series. Seriously just read them. I was lucky to find this one in my local library’s e-book section so I could download it straight to my Kindle. Score!

Forgiven by Karen Kingsbury

The book I read from start to finish in October was, you guessed it, the second book in the Firstborn series called Forgiven. Honestly, so far I’m really liking this series more than Redemption. It’s just way more gripping which is saying a lot because Redemption was very gripping.

***Again I’ll say, there are spoilers ahead!!

This book starts out with a terrifying accident. With two CKT families ripped apart due to deaths from a drunk driving incident, Katy Hart has to be on her game to help unify and support her CKT kids more than ever. Teaching them not only how to heal but how to forgive the driver who took their friends’ lives. In Hollywood, Dayne Matthews is completely broken. Living with his leading lady in the current film he is working on, he finds a religious center where you learn to be your own god. Dayne decides to start to take a dangerous dive into it but luckily at the same time is coming to Bloomington for a couple of weeks to shoot scenes for his upcoming film. As he’s there, he reconnects with Katy Hart and finds more than just the fact he loves her so much, he also finds questions about the true and living God that need to be answered. For the Baxter family, we find a newly pregnant Ashley going through her mother’s letters and stumbling upon the fact she has an older sibling they never knew as well as family patriarch, John, beginning a friendship with Elaine Denning who is a longtime widow and friend of his late wife Elizabeth. John reveals his biggest secret to Elaine, the existence of his firstborn son, and Elaine encourages John to start looking for him again, as was Elizabeth’s dying wish. This book was just so good. There were so many close calls and near figuring out who Dayne was to the Baxters that I was almost screaming by the end of the book! These books are so gripping and helpful to remind me to rely on God only and no one else. I just love the Baxters! Sadly though, my library only had the e-book version of this, not the Kindle edition so I bought it on Amazon. But that doesn’t matter. I would’ve gladly paid double the price because I loved it so much.

And there you have it. Those are the two books I read in the month of October. I appreciate your reading and I hope that this gives you some inspiration to add to your TBR list.

Until next time.
