What We Read - July 2022

Hello and welcome! In today's post I'm going to be sharing the books I read in the month of July and I also have a recommendation for any littles out there who may be just as book and dinosaur-obsessed as mine.

This month I read five books total. I feel as if I've been a little lazier about reading this month, and that's ok. It's been a busy month and life has just really been happening. I think it's important to not put pressure on yourself and to remember that reading is supposed to be fun. I'm not longer at the mercy of some class or teacher forcing me to read a book to get a passing grade on an assignment, but I'm doing this for fun. I think we can often get caught up in our goals and forget that it's okay to take a break and do what we feel like in the moment.

With that bit of jabbering over, let's get into the books.

Return by Karen Kingsbury with Gary Smalley

The first book I read this month is the third book in Karen Kingsbury's Redemption series. Again, a total win. Absolutely loved this book and I absolutely love the Baxter family. This book focuses a lot on the youngest child and only son of the Baxters, Luke, and the trials he is facing as he has turned completely away from his faith after 9/11. Luke has some growing up to do and in the process finds out he has a son with ex Raegan Decker. The book also has focus on the youngest of the Baxter girls, Ashley, and her tragic diagnosis which costs her something that she didn't really know she valued that much. These books are just incredible and I'm so thankful to have been turned onto them by my sister and mom. I read a physical copy of this book.

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The next book I read crosses another classic off my list and that is A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I absolutely adored this book. The storyline is completely wonderful. The book follows the young life of one Sarah Crew as she is put into boarding school. At first, she is one of the richest pupils there but a tragic twist comes and she's then forced to work for the school and her peers. With a positive attitude and a bit of imagination, Sarah comes through with a very happy ending. This is such a heartwarming story and I think the imagination Sarah possesses is something we all need more of. I listened to this book through Audible and it was an incredible performance! Highly recommend.

And Then They Were None by Agatha Christie

I'm not really sure if this book classifies as a classic in literature but it certainly classifies as a classic in the mystery genre. This was my first time reading an Agatha Christie novel and... wow. I honestly read the first bit of it and thought this is going to be so predictable. Well, I was definitely wrong. I was prompted to read this book after seeing a video posted by Morgan Long and Christy Anne Jones on Youtube. They made a video reading through this book and trying to solve the mystery together as they go along, which I thought was a cool idea. I thought because it was an older mystery story it would be very predictable and easy to figure out but I was wrong. And I want to clarify that I was so wrong... like right up to the epilogue wrong. You just have to read it. There's a reason Agatha Christie is the queen of mystery. I read a physical copy of this book.

Let Me Be a Woman by Elisabeth Elliot

Another book I read this month was Let Me Be a Woman by Elisabeth Elliot. I have to admit that Elisabeth Elliot is a new person to me. I'd never really heard of her before the last few months. I then started listening to "The Elisabeth Elliot Podcast" which is just a collection of her talks over the years, you can listen to them here. I found her extremely encouraging and I decided to look up any books she had written and decided to start with Let Me Be a Woman. This book is a collection of letters she wrote to her only daughter, Valerie when she was about to be married. It is full of sound advice on not only being a wife but being a woman and what that means biblically. I loved it so much that I even bought a copy of it for my sister who is to be married soon. Even as I approach seven years of marriage, I found so many helpful reminders and truths that I hadn't thought about before. I highly recommend this book to any women out there, especially those getting ready to be married or are married. I love Elisabeth Elliot's dry-and-cut approach to everything. I really wish she was alive today. Our present society could use her straightforward thinking. I listened to this book on Audible and the performance was pretty good.

Rejoice by Karen Kingsbury with Garey Smalley

I finished my month out by reading the fourth book in Karen Kingsbury's Redemption series, Rejoice. This book focuses on the life of Brooke West (née Baxter) after a tragic accident happens with her younger daughter, Hayley, which leads to devastating changes for her whole family as well as to her marriage. The story also includes Luke's marriage to Raegan, as well as some more twisted romance between Ashley and longtime love interest, Landon Blake. Again such a good series. I cannot recommend it enough. A really good series to also remind you of God's love. I read a physical copy of this book.

Littles Recommendation

Detective Dinosaur: Lost and Found by James Skofield and Robert Alley

This month, my son and I found a great little chapter book at the library called Detective Dinosaur. My son is newly three and completely dinosaur-obsessed and I found this book to be perfect for him. It's an adorable story of the brave (well maybe not so brave) Detective Dinosaur and his companion Officer Pterodactyl. This book has three chapters which are broken up into three cases. I think it is perfect for early readers and a good starting point if you would like to start reading chapter books to your younger kids. It has great illustrations and is really just a super fun story. We loved this book! It also appears there are more books in this series and I am excited to find them and read them as well.

And there you have it. Those are the five books I read this month plus a recommendation for any dinosaur-obsessed littles out there.

I hope you found some inspiration for your TBR list. Happy reading!

Until next time.
